Imagine
hiking, boating, or canoeing to a remote backcountry campsite located in a wild and natural northwoods setting. You are out on your own, without the modern conveniences provided at home or at a developed campground. That is what backcountry camping is all about. The Superior National Forest offers hundreds of remote campsites that are dispersed throughout the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) as well as throughout numerous
non-wilderness areas located in the forest. A backcountry campsite offers fire grates, a box
latrine, and tent pads. If you are looking for a primitive type of camping experience and an opportunity to get away from crowds of people, a backcountry campsite might be for you. If so, remember, to respect your National Forest by packing out everything you bring with you and leave your campsite the way you would like to find it. Use only the approved fire grate for your fire and make use of dead and down wood away from the campsite.
