Grand
Portage Coastline, Erik W. L.
Anderson
The historic Grand Portage, or "Great Carrying
Place" starts at the Grand Portage National Monument and extends
eight and one-half miles to the old site of Fort Charlotte. The
National Monument is the old summer headquarters of The Northwest
Company, a fur trading company of voyageur times. "This
centuries old Grand Portage became a major gateway into the interior of
North America for exploration, trade and commerce. It linked Lake
Superior with a westward system of lakes and rivers." The
hike is an easy hike takes you across a boardwalk through a beaver pond
and ends at the beginning of the beautiful Cascades. This series
of falls still has remnants of old log chutes from logging days and ends
with the High
Falls, Minnesota's highest falls.
