Nadine
Blacklock, 1953-1998
 Nadine
was co-photographer or sole photographer of eight books:
Photographing Wildflowers; Journeys to Door Country; Our Minnesota;
Border Country; The Hidden Forest; Gooseberry; The Duluth Portfolio; and
her final retrospective, Fifteen Years in a Photographer’s Life. Border
Country received the 1999 National Publishers Freedom Award for the best
book in the Arts and Nature category. Nadine was always involved in the
total book project from conception to photography, to layout, to
overseeing the final printing.
Like her writing, Nadine’s photographs were often edited to be very
succinct. She took great joy in paring something down to its essence.
Photography was only a part of Nadine’s life. She believed in
volunteering for numerous environmental causes, and contributing
financially to those same causes. Most notably - she was one of the
co-founders of the Blacklock Nature
Sanctuary, volunteering much of her time during its fledgling stages
of development. She served as president of the Minnesota Parks and
Trails Council where she was instrumental in several major additions to
Minnesota’s state park system including North Shore purchases of Illgen
Falls and Gold Rock
Point. In 1998, Nadine and her black Lab, Paddles, were killed in an
automobile accident while starting out on a photography trip on the
North Shore of Lake Superior.
Through her bequest, the Blacklock Nature Sanctuary purchased land
near Gold Rock Point — now named the Nadine Blacklock Legacy Lakeshore.
On this property there was a small cabin. Through renovations it is now
a deluxe cabin with running water, satellite TV, private beaches, and
gorgeous views. It is available to Sanctuary artists for a few weeks per
year, but when not in use by artists, it is available for public rentals
through Cove Point Lodge in Beaver Bay at (218) 226-3221. Income from
rentals goes toward property taxes and preserving this piece of property
from further development.
