Lake Vermilion has over 40,000 acres of water open for canoeing, boating, and fishing.  Vermilion is a gateway to the BWCA via the Trout Lake Portage.  While open to motors, Vermilion is still home to breeding pairs of bald eagles, osprey, and also home to deer, moose, otter, mink, muskrat, pine marten, raccoon, porcupine, bear, and over 200 loons.

In the winter, Lake Vermilion area links to over 1000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails and 200 km of groomed cross country ski trails.
