Okontoe is nestled in one hundred acres of beautifully wooded land, 27 miles up the historic Gunflint Trail. The family owned campground is bordered on both sides by the small, non-motorized lakes, Bow and Quiver. The lakes have small-mouth, walleye, northern, and panfish, hence the Chippewa name of Okontoe, or "waters of many fish". A shallow creek runs through the middle of the campground to join the lakes. Nearly all of the 32 campsites are lake-side or lake-view and privately spaced. Each site is furnished with a picnic table and fire grate. We welcome your pets, and ask that in consideration of other campers, they be cleaned up after and kept on a leash. We welcome your horses as well! Thirteen sites in our campground have been developed to accommodate equestrian camping. In addition to a picnic table and fire grate, each campsite is equipped with a stationary 30' long x 7' high cable stakeout with space for four horses. The sites are spacious and have room for 50' to 90' of rig (truck, trailer, etc.) The campground opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes at the end of September. |
