Fire Quick Facts Greg Vollhaber has
taken over as Incident Commander of the East
Zone Complex as of Friday, September 22, 2006,
at 7:00 A.M. The East Zone Complex consists of
four fires: Famine
(4044 acres).
Red Eye,
(1792 acres),
Sumpet
(58 acres), and
Patriot
(4 acres) fires.
Public Meetings: A final public
information meeting, conducted by Superior
National Forest, took place at the Mid Trail
Fire Hall #1 on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at
10:00 A.M. As of September 24th, public
meetings will be held on an as needed basis.
Strategies: The Famine, Red Eye,
Sumpet, and Patriot Fires are being managed
under a confinement strategy. These fires
will continue to be monitored by air and
suppression actions will be taken as needed.
Current
Closures: All closure orders pertaining
to BWCAW entry points and campgrounds (with
exception of the Kekekabic Trail) for the Famine
and Red Eye Fire areas have been rescinded as of
Friday, September 22, 2006. The closure orders
remain in effect for the Cavity Lake and Turtle
Fire areas. For addition information, check the
Superior National Forest website at www.fs.fed.us/r9/superior. Motorists using the
Gunflint Trail are reminded to drive with care.
There will continue to be extra traffic due to
fire fighting activities, as well as fall color
tours and hunting. For additional fire

THE PUBLIC IS URGED TO USE EXTREME CAUTION WITH
THE USE OF CAMPFIRES.
9/13/06 East Zone Current Fires:
There are currently 8 wildfires that have
been detected on the Gunflint and Tofte Ranger
Districts over the past week. Most of these
fires are the result of lightning. None of the
fires are in areas where structures or other
values at risk are being threatened. Conditions
are very dry for this time of year. Weather is
expected to change this weekend with rain
expected.
Famine: Tofte District Located ½ mile
northeast of Brule Lake. Fire is 5 acres in
size. Burning in a hardwood mix. Fire is in
BWCAW. Aircraft is being used to confine the
fire to natural boundaries.
Sumpet: Tofte District - Fire is less than 1
acre in size. The fire is being confined to
natural boundaries. Aircraft is being use to
assist in confinement. Fire is within the BWCAW.
Scott Creek: Tofte District Located 1 mile
southwest of Silver Island Lake. Approximately
10 acres in size. Burning in lowland spruce/fir
and old logging slash with pockets of blowdown.
The fire is being suppressed with engines,
dozers and hand crews.
Juno: Tofte District Located on the south
shore of Brule Lake. Less than 1 acres in size.
Fire has been contained and is in mop-up/monitor
status.
Baker: Tofte District Located near Baker Lake
within the campground. This fire is less than 1
acre. The fire has been contained and is
considered out at this time.
Red Eye: Gunflint District Located 1 mile
southeast of Winchell Lake and 2 miles northeast
of Brule Lake. The fire is approximately 5 acres
in size. The fire is within the BWCAW. This fire
is being contained to natural boundaries.
Aircraft is being used to confine the fire.
Patriot: Gunflint District Located south of
Seagull Lake. Fire is less than 1 acre. Fire is
burning in the Arc Lake prescribed burn south of
Seagull Lake. This fire is being assessed
aerially for the appropriate management
response.
Cavity Lake:
Gunflint District This fire is located at the
end of the Gunflint Trail, southwest of Seagull
Lake. The fire burned 31,830 acres in August and
is unstaffed. This fire continues to show
interior burning of areas that did not burn in
August. All spots burning are well within the
interior of the fire and not threatening to
escape the boundaries.
