We
had some extra trips this week. On Thursday we went up the Gunflint
Trail to the Magnetic Rock Trail. We were looking for Wood Lillies and
found three. Two were wilted but the third one was beautiful. Next year
we will try to go earlier. We did not go to the rock but saw Bristly
Sarsaparilla and some White Pyrola. The most striking thing was the many
harebells. It's the first time I remember seeing them, in our county,
anyplace but on the shore. On the trail we saw our first Goldenrod. That
is a sign of summer ending - So Sad!
On Saturday we went back to Limbo Beach Bog to find some Sundew. We
found them but only one wilted flower. There were two kinds of
Cottongrass. We had some "discussion" as to what their Latin
name was & ended up with some agreement. These
"discussions" are part of the fun. The Pitcher-plants &
Arethusa were still lovely.
On Wednesday we began by driving up highway
#61. It is getting so colorful with the Daisy's, Bird's-foot Trefoil and
Fireweed. We were invited to a yard on the lake at Big Bay. This woman
had bark chip trails through her beautiful woods. There was lots of
Linnea, some One-flowered Wintergreen but best of all - and what we came
for was the Striped Coralroot. We had not seen that for about 15
years.
We then went to Grand Portage and walked a ways on the Grand
Portage Trail. There was a nice bunch of Canada Anenome. We then
went up to High Falls, almost on the Canadian Border, and walked up to
the falls. They were nice but not spectacular because late in the season
and lack of rain. We ate on a bench by the trail. It was a warm day
today so we chose to stay close to Lake Superior.
