This
is the beginning of our 24th
year of looking at wildflowers
in Cook County, MN. We are three
senior women who just love to
get out and explore and learn
new things. We are even getting
together all winter but don't
find too many flowers at that
time, but no matter.

June 19th-22nd, 2005 - Report
by
Sunday, June 19 (Father's
Day): We went to
Artist Point and the Breakwall (Grand
Marais). We were pleased to
see The Butterwort
blooming - also 3-toothed
Cinquefoil, a few Potentilla
fruitacosa and Bearberry
blooming. Even though there is a
lot of Bearberry in this county
I have only seen it once before
- on Isle
Royale.
Monday, June 20: We
went to the end of the Arrowhead
Trail to the Border
Route Trail. We were there
last year when the
Large-round-leaf Orchid was in
bloom and wanted to see if any
other special thing was
blooming. We saw the buds of the
Large-round-leaf Orchid but no
other orchid. However we did see
a large area of leaves of the
Round-leafed Hepatica which is
rare here.
June 22, 2005: In
town the Lilacs are at their
peak. The road sides are
colorful with Yellow
Buttercup and Yellow
Hawkweed, Orange
Hawkweed and Caraway. The Ox-eye
Daisies and Birds-foot
Trefoil are beginning and
with all those we call it
"Natures
Garden." There
are very many Mountain
Ash in bloom - hope they
will produce a bumper crop of
bright red berries and the
birds that eat them. We
planned on driving quite a
ways today and it turned out
to be about 120 miles.
Gunflint Trail > Devil
Track Road > Ball Club >
Trestle Pine > The Grade
> Crescent Lake Campground
for lunch > Sawbill Trail
> 600 Rd. > Two Island
River Rd > Carmer Rd. >
Sugar Loaf Rd. > #61. Our
goals were to see the Blue-flag
Iris and "The
Sanctuary" on the Sugar
Loaf Rd. "The
Sanctuary" proved to be
somewhat of a disappointment
in that the stream that goes
through it had flooded and
laid down with pressure and
dirt all the plants. It was
also late in the season and
underbrush was overgrown. We
did see Iris
in many areas. We also saw,
among others: Pitcher Plants,
Yellow Pond Lilies, Early
Meadow Rue, Roses,
Columbine,
Cow
Parsnip and Linnea.
