This
is the beginning of our 25th
year of looking at wildflowers
in Cook County, MN. We are three
senior women who just love to
get out and explore and learn
new things. We are even getting
together all winter but don't
find too many flowers at that
time, but no matter.

Last weekend I went to
Moose Lake to visit
Blacklock's Wildflower
Sanctuary. The
Trillium & Bellwort were
in bloom and I walked the
paths and took pictures and
collected wood ticks. From
there we went to Mpls for a
birthday party. On the way
home on Interstate #35
between Hinkley and Willow
River - it was exciting to
see MANY patches of
Trillium as far as the
eye could see. They were in
Birch forests as well as Red
Pine forests. The lilacs in
Mpls. were almost done while
the lilacs here are just
beginning to turn color.
Today, Wednesday, we went to
the end of the Gunflint
Trail to look for wild
flowers around Chik-Wauk
Lodge. They are hoping to
make this lovely stone
building into a historic
site with trails. It is a
beautiful place, lots of
large rocks covered with
ferns and lichens. Of
special interest were three
Pink Moccasin-flower in
bud. Other things we saw in
bloom today were:
Wood Anemone,
Goldthread, Pussy-toes,
Strawberries,
Corydalis, Bearberry,
Currant, Blueberries,
Eyebrite & British Soldiers
(they aren't really a
flower!) and many
Marsh Marigolds. The
special thing for the week
were the many blooming wild
fruit trees: Elderberry, Pin
Cherry and Juneberry. The
Tamarak trees are so
beautiful with their new
needles and so are the
hillsides with the many
shades of fresh greens. It
again, was a wonderful
day.!!
