We first went to the bog
on Lima Grade. One would
have to get out of the car
to appreciate its beauty.
Most beautiful were the
Bog Rosemary. Many
Leather-leaf were in
bloom but they suffered from
the lack of moisture. The
Labrador Tea seemed to
suffer the most - many were
pure brown. It will be
interesting to see if they
come up next year.
We ate lunch early on the
Mink Lake fishing dock.
Our next stop was on the Old
Ski Hill parking lot. We
went south on the
Superior
Hiking Trail and walked on
the boardwalk where there
were so many
Marsh Marigolds
blooming. We also saw
Goldthread (called that
because of golden roots) but
they showed signs of dryness
too.
Many
Spring Beauty, some
Nodding Trillium and
Wood Anemone. Soon there
will be a whole field of
Clintonia (Blue-bead Lily).
It was hot there and we saw
and felt the black flies -
darn!!
Now figure this: The leaves
down here on the shore are
pale green and newly out -
but over the hill where it
is warmer the leaves are
mostly not out.
Puzzles of the day: Did we
identify these two
correctly?
Swamp Fly Honeysuckle
Lonicera oblongifolia
Baneberry - or
Sweet Cicely?
Because, some things we have
to re-learn each year -
because they look a bit
different - or have just
fallen out of our minds
Many beautiful wild fruit
trees blooming and also many
Marsh Marigolds - but
they will soon be done.
