Saturday, May 26th was a
special treat. My friend
Sandy took me to a place
overlooking Fowl Lake where
she had found the rare
Oxytropis viscida, sometimes
known as Sticky Locoweed. It
was a beautiful day and good
company.
Wednesday, May 30: was also a
special day. My friend Ken had
drawn a map for me to show where
he found Cuckooflowers - in
town, near the highway dept.
In his book they are not found
in Cook County - "the nearest
record they have is St Louis
County. In fact the Atlas only
shows four locations in the
state where a collection has
been." We however had found them
before, actually, Mary found
them many years ago. These were
on County Road 7 near the Law
Enforcement between two homes.
The blooming fruit trees are
still lovely and are being
joined by the ornamental trees
that have been planted in town
and even the lilacs are showing
color. It is so beautiful
driving around noticing all the
fresh greens of different trees.
Then down to Sugar Loaf Road,
continuing up until the
Superior Hiking Trail
parking lot. We went east along
the river where we remembered
the
Marsh Marigolds. There were
some but not as many as before.
We continued up that road to a
spot the book "Wildflower Safaris by Car " called "The
Sanctuary". On the roadside were
many violets mostly yellow and
blue and as we stepped in
towards the river we saw
Yellow
Trout Lilies & Lg. flowered
Bellwort. We had hoped to find
Jack-in-the-Pulpit but didn't.
Along the road, to our surprise
was a large area of White
Clematis (Virgin's bower) not
blooming but had been cut
because it was too close to the
road.
Then down to Father Baraga's
Cross. We thought we might eat
lunch there but it was too cold
and we had just come from up the
road a ways and were too hot.
"If you don't like the weather
here, wait a few minutes and it
will change"
